First Lego League Explore

In Explore, teams of students ages 6-10 focus on the fundamentals of engineering as they explore real-world problems, learn to design and code, and create unique solutions made with LEGO bricks and powered by LEGO® Education WeDo 2.0.

TEAM BASICS

A group of 2-6 students (ages 6-10) and at least two adult coaches make up a FIRST LEGO League Explore team. No technical experience is required, and the season guides provided by FIRST national outline each of the 12 team meeting sessions, providing 12-16 hours of guided activities for teams.

Please note FIRST and the DFW Technology & Education Council do not match children to existing teams due to our privacy policy. We encourage individuals looking for a team to contact their local schools, libraries, or youth organizations that may have a team in place or find others who have interest and start your own team.

TEAM & EVENT REGISTRATION

FIRST LEGO League Explore teams in Texas get to do the Texas Two-Step for registration! All FLL Explore teams worldwide must register nationally with FIRST®for this year’s challenge PLAYMAKERS to be considered an official FLL Explore team and receive the annual challenge materials – that’s Step One. Next, FLL Explore teams who wish to participate in local events must register for each event they want to attend. FLL Explore teams in North Texas will register through the DFW Technology & Education Council, the FIRST LEGO League Explore Program Delivery Partner for North Texas.

National Team Registration – Step 1

Initial registration for all FLL Explore Teams is regulated by FIRST® headquarters. In order to register as a FLL Explore Team, the team’s coach and/or coordinator must register with FIRST®, create an individual profile and create a team.

After the team’s Lead Coach/Mentor has created a team, they will need to invite a 2nd Lead Coach/Mentor/Contact for the team. Both coaches must be screened through the FIRST® Youth Protection Program. The Lead Coach/Mentor also needs to invite each team member’s parent/guardian to register their child for the team. The purpose of this registration process is to ensure that all the necessary paperwork has been completed and is received by FIRST®.

Season registration is ($99) and includes the 2020-2021 team participation fee, exclusive PLAYMAKERS Explore Set, Engineering Notebooks for each student, and a Team Meeting Guide for coaches. New this season – with your team registration, you’ll receive access to digital resources through the FIRSTThinkscape Portal, including PLAYMAKERS Team Meeting Guide and a static and interactive version of the of the Engineering Notebook.

Your team will also need a reusable LEGO Education WeDo 2.0 Core Set ($205), which can be purchased through FIRST. It is also recommended that you have an electronic device, such as a laptop or tablet, for your team to research their Challenge and code their robot model.
